Cobberdog vs Labradoodle

How Is a Cobberdog Different from a Labradoodle?

A Labradoodle is a cross between a Labrador Retriever and a Poodle. Because it is a mixed breed, Labradoodles can be genetically unpredictable, with puppies varying in appearance, coat type, temperament, and size depending on which parent they take after.

The Australian Cobberdog, on the other hand, is a breed in development. Cobberdog puppies come from generations of carefully planned Cobberdog-to-Cobberdog breeding, which allows for greater consistency and predictability in coat, temperament, size, and appearance.

While Labradoodles and Cobberdogs share historical connections, they are now on different breeding paths. The Cobberdog has been developed over time into a more distinct and standardized breed, much like closely related terrier breeds that have diverged into their own defined lines.

How Is a Cobberdog Different from an Australian Labradoodle?

The Australian Cobberdog and the Australian Labradoodle are genetically very similar, sharing much of their early foundation. However, in earlier development, Soft-Coated Wheaten Terrier was introduced into Cobberdog lines, while it was not included in Australian Labradoodle breeding.

One of the key differences today is the name. Because “Labradoodle” remains part of the Australian Labradoodle name, it is often mistaken as a simple Labrador and Poodle cross. The name “Cobberdog” was chosen to better distinguish the breed and reflect its purpose as a devoted companion and trusted friend.
